This thing that we do

Kinbaku philosophy

We live in a culture that is at some odds with its own humanity. There is a constant pressure away from erotic ideas and expression, a desire to legitimise ourselves and our activities by politely ignoring this part of our experience.Kinbaku means to be tied, tightly. To have an inner fantasy that is dark, to be helpless at the hands of a hungry intent. The rope is a conduit for power exchange, a small battle to be forced to shed this pressure of denying our desires. If we are lucky in finding this space we also find beauty in submission, destruction, and the satiation of this part of our humanity.

One on One personalised learning

Private Tuition

Private Lessons are the fastest way to progress your rope skills. The focus of one-on-one attention lets us work together to quickly improve with immediate feedback.Best suited to intermediate and advanced students who are looking to improve to the next level.Beginners are very welcome, however I generally recommend achieving the basics via group classes first as a more cost effective option.

  • 2 tops, $95/hr/ea

It's not about the money

Mutual Aid

Rope is a passion pursuit, and not my business, primary income etc.I charge money for services so that my in-lesson time is respected, my expenses and time in building my knowledge and skillset is valued, and to make sure that I'm working with students who are highly motivated. If you would like to work with me, but find it difficult with aspects of the pricing structure, schedule, etc please reach out to me and we can find a solution for you.I'm open as well to barter, skill swaps, labour in kind, and most non-monetary forms of exchange.

Make it your Own

"Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is essentially your own."
-- Bruce Lee
One day I might find a sensei whom captures my heart entirely. Until then, I'm endlessly fascinated with the different approaches and philosophies of different lineages and schools of thought.Aketchi styles technical engineering, precision, seme philosophy. Naka's traditional aesthetic and method. Yukimuran focus on the models experience with minimal rope, slow moving and powerful. Bingo's somatic flows.

Focused Study

Guided collaborative Kinbaku study group

Kenkyukai Brisbane

A path for learning

Exploring Intermediate to Advanced concepts in a guided peer learning structured fashion, as opposed to a class structure with curriculum. Attendees workshop a given idea for the afternoon by attempting the same brief and discussing results. There are two main styles of shibari gathering: a nawakai (rope meeting), an informal social gathering, and a kenkyukai (study meeting). Kenkyukai Brisbane is bringing this format locally to give our community a space to pursue advanced peer learning outside the context of particular schools, styles, patterns, etc.

Who can attend Kenkyukai

We welcome all ethical and respectful participants. The topics covered will typically be of a level where tops and bottoms should be comfortable with ‘inventing’ ties, working outside of defined patterns and understanding the underlying mechanics to build safe ties.Topics will, in most cases, assume a tying pair. Self tiers are welcome to attend but we advise they pick and choose as some topics may be difficult/impossible to self tie.

Other Considerations

Because this is a structured event, we strongly ask that you attend from the beginning, as it’s difficult to add new participants as they arrive.

What happens at Kenkyukai?

  • 5m - Introductions, greetings, acknowledgement of country, house rules and keeping.

  • 10m - Discussion of the afternoons topic, brief Q&A

  • 1.5h - Lab time for participants to work on the topic

  • 20m - Review and Discussion time, what did and did not work, pros and cons, different approaches and their advantages.

  • 1.5h - Iteration by adding a point of complexity, attempting the topic again with the review in mind and adding another level of complexity, such as introducing a second factor like torsion, bamboo, position, orientation, suspension, etc.

  • 20m - Final review and discussion

  • 1.5h - Free exploration time until end of afternoon.

For the curious

Model Enquiries

For those looking to be tied, a respectful message is a great start. If we have some chemistry and a shared philosophy on the why of the tie, chances are good.Collaborators for content, the discussion is more open. Lets talk about a concept and go from there. No professional services are currently offered for Kinbaku outside an educational context.
